It’s finals week and I needed to write about something fun so without further ado…
The MET! One of the most exciting nights of the year for us judgmental people! It is so fun to see what everyone is wearing and the themes are (usually) so chaotic because about 60% of people who attend actually follow them. Although this year, if I would have attended (someone please invite me to the MET maybe a cool independent designer), I would not have followed the theme.
This year, the theme was “in honor of Karl.” Karl Lagerfeld died in 2019, and is known for revitalizing Chanel as its creative director, as well as his clothing and accessory lines. However, he was a dreadful person, and I do not understand why they would choose him out of all of the fashion icons. I’ve definitely lost some respect for the MET, it’s just such a lame choice. I don’t really feel like diving into all of the disgusting comments he made because that will drag this piece down a lot, but if you want to know more quickly check out this post from Jameela Jamil. There may be some triggering content in it, so it might be wise to do some research before checking this post if you’re worried about that.
Anyways, I’m going to dive into the looks, but I’m completely disregarding theme for obvious reasons. I hope you enjoy my completely unqualified and probably correct opinions about this year’s dinner party guests who got together to celebrate a dead guy!
The woman of the decade. She shaved her head and pulls it off so well, but nobody is surprised about that. I have heard some people say that her dress is boring but honestly I think it is gorgeous, and even if it is minimal, the headpiece makes up for it. This look is pretty close to MET perfection in my eyes. It’s an interesting shape but it’s also simple and elegant, and the headpiece is funky and adds more of an artsy aspect to the look.
Yes Jared give us furry! This looks so CGI and is also guaranteed to show up in one of my nightmares in the next couple of weeks (probably chasing me around a cornfield- not sure why that’s what I’m envisioning but it is). This was a choice for sure and I know he thought he was hilarious and sweating and giggling in that suit the whole night (he did have a little costume change, although the other look was not a vast improvement).
She looks amazing, but the dress is so boring on its own. I absolutely love the jacket, I feel like that is the redeeming quality of this outfit because the dress alone looks like something I’ve seen so many times before. I just feel like she would wear this anywhere- it doesn’t feel that MET?? I am honestly surprised the Jenners are still going to the MET but good for them.
Princess moment! It’s not my favorite look of the night but it is gorgeous, and she looks stunning. I love the little belt. It kind of gives wedding? I also like the tiered look at the bottom and if it was tiered further up, or even for the full skirt, I think it would have been a lot more funky.
I love the top of the dress, the flowers are seriously gorgeous and I also love the glove/sleeve situation. This shade of pink is not my favorite though, and I feel like the darker flowers would have looked better with a different color. The color combination is throwing me off and the pencil skirt vibes, I wish it was more flowy as far as the skirt, maybe a little colorful (or even white) sheer moment would have been cool.
Holy moly she looks so good. Chanel did amazing on this one. The shoes are sick. The length of the pants is controversial but I get it and it works. One of my favorite looks of the night for sure, I think the dimensions of everything are really unique, the tie and the jacket especially. Killed it!
I don’t care what anyone says, this man killed it. Am I biased due to loving him and his personality in general? Yes absolutely! However nobody else was wearing shorts and I believe he shaved his legs for this which is spectacular. The boots and long socks moment is a good one, and I love the long coat. And color, finally!! I know black and white was “on theme” this year but I was so bored of it. Also hi Viola in the back wearing pink- another win. Karl had said that pink was his least favorite color, so her look is automatically amazing (I would review every look if I could but there are over 200, Vogue has them all on their website!)
I love Suki so much but I feel like she could have done more! The wrap around floral dress feels outdone. But also it feels weird even criticizing it because she looks beautiful and I would love to wear that dress. Outside of the MET scene, this look would get a standing ovation from me, I love the colorful eye look and the dress (the only thing I would change is the shoes). Again, it just does not give MET. Robert is also there!
Very luxurious, very black and white paper towels moment, very dramatic slit. This is quite MET and I do not really like it however I respect the move. I love the accessories and hair too. Very shnazzy but also I cannot get paper towels out of my mind
Reminds me of FashionNova? Just a very basic silhouette and concept, I fear.
I love the simplicity of this look so much. The little asymmetrical waist moment is so cute and I like the hanging details a lot too. I think more accessories would have spiced this up more, I would have done lots of rings and necklaces in mixed metals or even just silver. This is one of my favorite looks of the night though, I love it (controversial take I know)
This is the MET! Yes! Stunning! Bejeweled, reminds me of the Heavenly Bodies theme in 2018. I love the gold too, it looks so gorgeous an the earrings and shoes are incredible. I like the asymmetry of it too, its funky and fresh.
I like this look a lot, also it was a sustainable look designed by an independent designer which is awesome. I do wish it wasn’t fully black, but I understand what she was going for. The vibe stays consistent at every event she goes to, which I respect. I do kind of miss her green roots, which I never thought I would but they were so signature. I feel like they would make this outfit so much more fun too
Without a doubt, one of the most gorgeous looks of the night. She looks so stunning, the silhouette is stunning and I love the little fringe on the bottom. The trim is such a fun addition too, everything about this look is perfection and beautiful and I want to try on this dress immediately. The dress accentuates her little tattoos, too!
Fringealicious
Wedding look but make it a little funk and grunge and turn the gloves black
Her meows plus the vape were just so… Doja Cat. No complaints, this is what the MET was made for. Incredible look. Much better and more creative than Jared Leto, and proof that women always do it better.
I love this look, it reminds me of Tim Burton for some reason? The black and white strings as the skirt are so fun and the flowers, just the whole look is new and something I haven’t seen before. One of the best looks of the night in my humble opinion
Giving us absolutely nothing!
Not sure how I feel about this one- I think mixed emotions. The heels and socks are an amazing look, I love the casual aspects of this outfit. The fit makes it more casual, and the low-waisted skirt and broad shoulders. The color looks gorgeous on her, and I love the headband and earrings, and the way they contrast with the rest of the look and add a little elegant spin on it. I have never been a fan of social media influencers at events like this but Emma is and always will be the exception in my mind.
I am not a big fan of this look, it’s giving So You Think You Can Dance costume for a contemporary performance meets school dance? Very much 2013 to me for some reason as well. It’s not a least favorite of the night, just nothing too special. I loved her look last year so I had high expectations, so this one might be on me.
This is how men at the MET need to be dressing! Accessories, drama, lovely all around
Here are a few more of my favorite looks of the night, with no particular explanations. Elle Fanning may have been my favorite overall and I truly cannot explain why- I just loved every little detail
Thank you for reading my silly outfit opinions! I will see you soon with a return to some more regular content, but this was fun. I hope May is off to a lovely start.
Cheers,
